The 2023 Women’s World Cup is well underway – today, we’ll be looking at three of the top performers so far, from a variety of teams.

Of course, the tournament is far from over, as we are still in the group stage of the competition. We’ve seen some great games so far – Ireland vs Canada and Argentina vs South Africa were both instant classics.

We will do an additional piece at the end of the World Cup, examining the best players when the dust has finally settled.

Jenni Hermoso

Spain are definitely one of the teams to watch in 2023 World Cup. Jenni Hermoso has arguably been their best player, creating no end of chances for their forwards.

So far, Hermoso has scored a single goal, alongside two assists. In 2 games, this would be an impressive tally on its own – but it is the 5 chances that she has created so far that lands her a spot on this list.

Mina Tanaka

Japan, so far, are looking like one of the stronger teams in the World Cup. Their strong outings have been in no small part due to the wonderful performances of Mina Tanaka, who has been an excellent creative influence for her team.

She has registered more assists than any other player in the tournament so far. Up to this point, Tanaka has set up three goals and scored one in two games.

A brilliant dribbler of the ball, Tanaka also possesses excellent passing and vision – not to mention the composure and quick thinking to be able to pick out the correct pass in order to create chances.

Ary Borges

The top goalscorer at the Women’s World Cup so far, Ary Borges was Brazil’s spearhead in their dominant victory over a hapless Panama outfit.

As Canarinhas defeated their opponents by a score of 4-0 – Borges was involved in every goal. She scored three, setting up the other (which was scored by Zaneratto João).

Thus far, Borges has certainly been the most dangerous forward player in the competition. Time and time again, she cut inside and left Panamanian defenders in the dust – her pace, combined with her adroit dribbling ability, make her a frightening prospect for any full-back to come up against.

Should Borges continue her good run of form, Brazil could be the team to beat in the 2023 World Cup – they will put even the sternest of defences to the test this year.
