Chelsea have confirmed that forward Mia Fishel has picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury whilst away with the United States.
The 22-year-old had been called up for the Women’s CONCACAF Gold Cup but she had to withdraw from the squad following this serious setback. The Blues have issued a short statement wishing the striker a quick recovery:
“Mia Fishel has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury while on international duty with the US Women’s National Team.”
“Mia will be assessed by a specialist in the coming days and will then begin her rehabilitation with the club’s medical team at Cobham. Everyone at Chelsea would like to wish Mia the very best for her recovery.”
Fishel only joined Chelsea last summer
The Blues paid a reported $250,000 to sign the American international from Tigres UANL. She was a prolific scorer for the Mexican side, hitting the back of the net 47 times in 64 appearances across two seasons.
However, despite getting off to a great start by scoring on her Chelsea debut against Tottenham back in October, Fishel has only scored 1 more goal in 11 subsequent appearances for her club. It must be said, though, that manager Emma Hayes has used her mostly as a substitute.
The striker has impressed playing for the USA
Just a month after joining Chelsea, Fishel was handed her first cap for her country at senior level, featuring in a friendly against South Africa.
The American then got off the mark in her second appearance, scoring against Colombia in a 3-0 win. It was an extra special moment for the player, who was playing in her home city of San Diego.
After being called up for the Gold Cup, Fishel was poised to star at the tournament but the serious injury to her right knee means she is now set for many months on the sidelines.
