Chelsea boss Emma Hayes says she is excited that the Blues have managed to secure the signature of striker Mia Fishel.
It was announced at the weekend that the American will join the Blues from Tigres UANL for the start of the 2023/24 season, having put pen to paper on a three-year contract. Hayes says the 22-year-old possesses massive potential:
“Mia is an exceptional finisher whose box presence and movement make her elite. She can also create something from nothing and her prime years are to come.”
Fishel has gone on a slightly unconventional path since turning professional. After leaving college in 2021, she decided to move to Mexico, rather than take the traditional route of being drafted to a NWSL club.
She was selected by Orlando Pride in the 2022 Draft but her desire to win trophies straight away led to her signing for Tigres instead.
Fishel has scored goals for fun in Mexico
The switch to Tigres proved to be the right decision for the young forward. She hit the back of the net 17 goals in as many appearances during the 2022 Apertura.
It meant that Fishel became the first overseas player to win the Golden Boot in the Liga MX Femenil.
Chelsea have paid a sizeable fee to secure her services
After continuing her excellent form in 2023, it was only a matter of time before Fishel made a move to a more high-profile league.
Chelsea managed to snap her up but not before paying around $250,000 for the striker, which is a mammoth fee, especially when you consider that she has not made her international debut for the USA yet.
Based on Hayes’ remarks, you would back Fishel to make a big impact on the Women’s Super League, with the mouth-watering prospect of a formidable partnership with Sam Kerr also on the cards.
