Chelsea Poised To Snap Up 22 y/o Striker Who Will Become The 2nd Most Expensive Signing In The Club’s History

Chelsea are set to sign Tigres UANL forward Mia Fishel for £200,000, according to the Evening Standard.

The American will become the Blues’ second most expensive signing after Pernille Harder, who joined from Wolfsburg for £250,000 in 2020.

Fishel is one of the brightest young stars in the women’s game, having scored 34 goals across two seasons for Tigres since she joined the Mexican club at the start of 2022.

The 22-year-old somewhat controversially turned down the chance to play for NWSL side Orlando Pride after being drafted, but she opted to make the switch to Tigres instead, where she has thrived.

Despite her short stay in Mexico, Fishel won the Golden Boot for the 2022 Apertura Championship, after scoring 17 times in as many appearances.

Fishel won’t be at the World Cup

Considering the striker’s outstanding goalscoring record, some may be surprised to hear that she hasn’t been handed a senior cap by the USA yet.

Fishel was called up for an 11-day training camp back in October 2020 but, at the time, she was still playing in college for UCLA Bruins. Since then, her international career has not taken off and she was not included in the US’s 23-player squad for the World Cup.

She will be Chelsea’s eighth summer signing.

Emma Hayes’ side have been very busy in the transfer market. OH Leuven’s Nicky Evrard and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Sjoeke Nüsken had been recruited even before the 2022/23 season was over but the Blues have also brought in the likes of Lyon’s Catarina Macario, Atletico Madrid’s Alejandra Bernabe, Paris Saint-Germain’s Ashley Lawrence, Aston Villa’s Hannah Hampton and Bristol City’s Brooke Aspin.

After losing both captain Magdalena Eriksson and Harder to Bayern Munich, the WSL champions did need to strengthen and, with Fishel also likely to be added to the squad, they have made some very impressive purchases this summer.
