The WSL season is just a single game away from its conclusion. Two teams remain in the title race – Marc Skinner’s Manchester United and Emma Hayes’ Chelsea. Who will emerge on top after the weekend?
As things stand, Chelsea will enter the final gameweek as heavy favourites to lift the trophy. Not only are they two points ahead of the Red Devils, they also have superior goal difference – Chelsea have a goal difference of +48, while United have +43.
As such, Marc Skinner’s team will need to hope that Chelsea suffer defeat in their final game of the campaign. If the Blues stumble to a stalemate, United will win to win by six goals or more at the weekend. Equalling Chelsea’s goal difference will not be enough, as the Blues have a superior goals tally.
With that out of the way, let’s take a look at who Manchester United and Chelsea will face up against in their last game of the 2022/23 WSL season.
Chelsea and Manchester United’s last game
Chelsea have the easier game of the two teams – they will take on bottom club Reading on Saturday afternoon.
However, this game is not as easy as it may seem. Reading are fighting for their WSL lives – a loss would condemn them to the women’s Championship. Due to this, Chelsea cannot afford to take this fixture lightly.
United, meanwhile, will take on Liverpool. The Reds have nothing to play for at this stage, being marooned in mid-table, but they would love nothing more than to spoil the party for their bitter rivals.
Whichever team fails to lift the trophy, it will be a cruel blow. United have led an inspiring underdog campaign this season, but Chelsea have likewise been sensational. Both are more than worthy of taking the top spot – but there can only be one.
