Kelly Smith Makes Exciting Title Prediction As She Assesses The Chances Of The Four Main Contenders

England legend Kelly Smith expects the WSL title race to go down to the final two games of the season.

Five points separate the four main contenders; Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal as we reach the final seven matches and Kelly believes the league is too close to call:

“Obviously we had a big game at the weekend with Chelsea beating Manchester United. Man Utd have been top for a good few weeks so it’s a big win for Chelsea. Bit dubious with the two penalty calls, I think Marc Skinner was a bit upset with that, but Chelsea are just doing what Chelsea do – winning when it matters. It’s really tight at the top and I think it could come down to the last couple of games of the season.”

“City have really impressed me of late. That 89th-minute winner from Bunny [Khadija] Shaw [against Brighton] really pushed them again. Bunny is leading the league for goals and it’s really tight and intense at the top. Arsenal are coming into a bit of form now. They’re in a good headspace after the final. Stina Blackstenius is scoring. She was struggling a little bit for goals but she’s hitting the net now and [Frida] Maanum’s playing well.”

Reigning champions Chelsea are currently odds-on with the bookmakers, which isn’t a surprise considering their recent form and the fact that Emma Hayes‘ side have more experience in this sort of title race.

United are really the unknown quantity. As Smith says, they were somewhat unlucky to lose against the Blues last weekend and Marc Skinner’s team have looked pretty formidable since the New Year.

City have recovered from a poor start to put a superb run of results together too, while Arsenal can’t be ruled out after beating Chelsea in the Continental Cup final. It’s really a difficult one to predict at this stage.
