Manchester United Go Top Of WSL With Win Over Spurs

Manchester United claimed the top spot in the WSL at the weekend, as they beat Tottenham Hotspur away from home by a score of 2-1.

It wasn’t an easy ride, however. United dominated the first half, but failed to make a breakthrough – it eventually came in the 67th minute, thanks to Leah Galton.

Spurs weren’t ready to simply lay down, though. They battled back and scored an equaliser in the 75th minute, with Beth England getting herself on the scoresheet.

United responded immediately to this, restoring their lead in the following minute with an own goal from Molly Bartrip. A red card for Molly Boone in the 80th minute set up an incredibly nervy finale to the game – but United hung on and took home the three points.

This win puts Manchester United at the top of the WSL. Despite this, the team in second, Chelsea, have a game in hand over the Red Devils. Should Chelsea win their next game (against Brighton on March 5), they will leapfrog United in the table – but a draw or a loss will ensure that United keep the top spot.

As well as this, Manchester City defeated Arsenal at the weekend by a score of 2-1. Two first half goals from Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly were enough to give City the win, despite a second half goal from the Gunners’ Rafaelle Souza.

Aston Villa demolished Brighton by six goals to two – the Villans romped to an easy victory, with Jordan Nobbs netting a hattrick along the way.

Finally, Liverpool fell to defeat at the weekend, with Leicester City beating them by a score of 1-0. Hannah Cain scored an early goal in the 8th minute for the Foxes and the Reds failed to find a response.
