REPORT: England Star Set To Miss World Cup With Injury

Chelsea midfielder Fran Kirby will miss out on the England squad for the 2023 World Cup due to a knee injury, which will also require surgery to correct the issue.

Kirby is just the latest in a long line of injuries within the England national team. Beth Mead and captain Leah Williamson have already been ruled out of contention for the World Cup – centre-half Millie Bright is also a major doubt.

As such, Lionesses head coach Sarina Wiegman will be given a major selection headache ahead of the World Cup. Currently, it is unclear who will take Kirby’s place in the squad. The World Cup will begin on July 20 – England’s first game, against Haiti, will take place on July 22.

In a post on Twitter, Kirby wrote: “”Unfortunately after a few months of rehab the decision has been made that I will require surgery on my knee. I have been trying my best to not have to undergo this but unfortunately my progress has been limited.”

“I’m absolutely gutted to announce that this means my season is over and I will not be able to make the World Cup. I’m going to be doing everything possible to be ready for the start of next season.”
