England and former WSL defender Lucy Bronze has had keyhole knee surgery after she suffered an injury in her last game against Chelsea in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals.

As such, Bronze will miss the second leg of the tie against the Blues, which Barcelona currently lead by a score of 1-0.. She could return to action sooner rather than later, however – Sarina Weigman and the Lionesses camp will be praying that Bronze will be fit to play in the upcoming 2023 Women’s World Cup.

According to Barcelona boss Jonatan Giraldez, Bronze may only be out of action for ‘just a couple of weeks.’ This will come as great news to England fans – the Lionesses camp is already somewhat depleted, so to receive positive news on a key player will come as a great relief.

Several England players could miss out on the 2023 World Cup, including Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Millie Bright. At this stage, losing a player as vital as Bronze could have a devastating impact on England’s campaign in that tournament.

During her time in England, Bronze played for several clubs in the WSL, including Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City – she also enjoyed spells at Sunderland and Lyon before making the jump to Barcelona.
