Manchester United forward Ella Toone says she is “gutted” that England captain Leah Williamson is set to miss the World Cup due to injury.
The Arsenal midfielder sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage in the 1-0 defeat to United on Wednesday night, and asked about her international teammate, Toone offered her support:
“Were’ all gutted for her. We can’t wait for her to be back and we’re all with her. She’s our captain, our leader and a massive part of our Euros-winning team. We’ll obviously go out there and hopefully make her as proud as we can.”
Williamson hasn’t been completely ruled out of the World Cup in Australia but, as Toone suggests, the likelihood of her being fit is very low.
With Williamson’s Gunners teammate Beth Mead and Chelsea’s Fran Kirby also unavailable due to their own knee injuries, Toone is expected to be given a lot of responsibility by Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman.
The 23-year-old will, hopefully, be up to the task. She has had a strong season in the Women’s Super League, scoring three times and providing eight assists, helping United to the top of the table. She will be looking to carry on that form for England this summer.
