Fifth in the WSL table and nine points behind league leaders Manchester United with six games to go, Aston Villa’s chances of winning the league title this season look incredibly slim. However, next season, teams at the top of the table should watch out – because the Villans could be strong title contenders.
Villa have made some serious signings this season – including the acquisitions of Jordan Nobbs and Lucy Staniforth in January. That’s without mentioning some of the great players they signed in the summer of 2022, which included Kenza Dali, Rachel Daly and Kirtsy Hanson (on loan from Manchester United).
This season, the Villans campaign was largely kneecapped by a poor start to the WSL year. They lost five of their first nine league games – including sloppy defeats against the likes of West Ham United and Everton.
This slow start prevented Villa from making an impact in the title scene – in fact, it mired them in a relegation battle, but they soon escaped once they found their footing.
Since losing to Arsenal on December 11, Aston Villa have not lost a single game in the WSL. But with games against the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United on the horizon, for how much longer will this great run continue?
The next run of fixtures will be a real trial by fire for this Villa team. If they emerge from it with more wins than losses, we make them a safe bet to do very well in the WSL next season.
