Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Reading, Aston Villa and Brighton were the WSL teams who won a place in the quarter finals of the Women’s FA Cup over the weekend.
Perhaps the most noteworthy game of the round came between Chelsea and Arsenal, two of the WSL’s top teams this season. The Gunners were on top for most of the game, registering 11 shots on target to Chelsea’s three – but the Blues would emerge victorious by a score of 2-0, thanks to goals from Sophie Ingle and Sam Kerr.
Manchester United also made it through to the quarters, as they annihilated Durham by a score of 5-0. Leah Galton, Alessia Russo and Hannah Blundell were among the goalscorer as Durham could only muster a single shot on target in response.
Elsewhere, Tottenham were stunned as they were beaten on penalties by lowly Reading. Spurs are on a terrible run in the WSL, having lost all of their last seven games – a result like this will only compound their misery.
Khadija Shaw scored four goals en route to Manchester City’s ruthless 8-1 rout against Bristol City. The Citizens scored four goals in each half – they didn’t take their foot off the gas for a single second in this game as they thoroughly trounced the Robins.
Aston Villa also managed to get past West Ham United – but it nearly didn’t end up as such. Villa led in the second half thanks to Rachel Daly, but West Ham grabbed an equaliser at the death through Dagný Brynjarsdóttir. Regardless, the Villans won 7-6 on penalties.
Elsewhere in the fifth round, Lewes beat Cardiff City 6-1, Brighton defeated Coventry United 5-0 and Charlton were beaten at home by Birmingham City.
