Manchester United defeated Brighton and Chelsea record a win over Aston Villa to set up a blockbuster FA Cup final on May 14 – here’s how the semi-finals panned out.
In the first semi-final of the weekend, on Saturday, April 15, Manchester United beat Brighton by a score of 3-2 in a certified FA Cup classic. In the first half, the Seagulls shockingly the took the lead after an own goal from Mary Earps – after the break, however, United soon hit back with a strike from Leah Galton.
Alessia Russo put United 2-1 up, but they were once again pegged back after a goal from Danielle Carter. Just as the game looked to peter out to a stalemate, Rachel Williams stabbed the ball beyond Lydia Williams in the 89th minute to give the Mancunian giants a dramatic win.
The following day, Chelsea took on a strong Aston Villa outfit in their respective semi-final. Both teams created plenty of chances, but neither could make the breakthrough – until superstar Sam Kerr popped up in the 59th minute to score the only goal of the game.
The game between United and Chelsea will mark the first time the two teams have met in the final of the Women’s FA Cup – additionally, it will also mark the first time that the Red Devils have reached this stage of the competition. With both teams jostling for position at the top of the WSL table, it is destined to be a scintillating encounter.
