WSL FA Cup Roundup: Massive Shock As Competition Favourites Crash Out

We witnessed a huge shock in the WSL FA Cup over the weekend, as title-hopefuls Manchester City were defeated by a brave Aston Villa outfit.

Despite entering the game as heavy favourites, City could not find a way to beat the Villans. The game was level at 1-1 for much of its duration – Rachel Corsie scored first for the Midlands team, before Deyna Castellanos fired home an equaliser.

The game progressed into extra time, where Rachel Daly struck in the 97th minute to stun the Sky Blues. They couldn’t find a response and Villa went through to the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Manchester United overcame a minor scare to defeat Championship outfit Lewes in their quarter-final game. They led 2-0, thanks to an own goal and a header from Vilde Boe Risa, but Lewes managed to peg them back to 2-1 late on with a goal from Emily Kraft.

The Red Devils kept their cool and did not panic – they restored their two-goal cushion in the 89th minute, as Nikita Parris poked home the final goal of the game.

Chelsea comfortably dismantled a struggling Reading side to get to the semis – Jess Carter, Guro Reiten and Maren Mjelde all got in on the act for the Blues. A late goal for the Royals proved to be nothing more than a mere consolation.

Finally, relegation-threatened Brighton beat Championship outfit Birmingham City 2-0, after a quickfire double salvo from Poppy Pattinson and Danielle Carter in the first half.
