WSL teams Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal all maintained their respective title challenges at the weekend with victories. However, Manchester City suffered a major derailment in their race for the top.
The Citizens were defeated by Arsenal by a score of 2-1. They took the lead early on thanks to Khadija Shaw, stunning the Gunners – nevertheless, Arsenal fought back and turned the tables in the second half, with their goals being scored by Frida Maanum and Katie McCabe.
Chelsea picked up an impressive win at the weekend, as they swept aside a tough Aston Villa outfit by a score of 3-0. Villa enjoyed most of the possession, but were unable to break Chelsea down – in return, the Blues were ruthless and clinical on the break. Jelena Cankovic, Guro Reiten and Aussie striker Sam Kerr all found themselves on the scoresheet, as the Villans failed to conjure up a response.
Manchester United bolstered their title dreams as they crushed a pitiful Brighton team by a score of 4-0 away from home. Brighton’s defensive approach did little to help them as Leah Galton, Lucia Garcia and Rachel Williams all scored en route to a Red Devils victory. United showed how different they are this season when they can bring quality like Lucia Garcia off the bench.
Leicester picked up a crucial win in their relegation dogfight as they defeated Reading by a score of 2-1. The game looked to be petering out to a draw – until Carrie Jones won it for the Foxes with virtually the last kick of the game.
Tottenham’s miserable run trundled on, as they picked up yet another defeat at the weekend against Everton. The scores were level late on, as the North London outfit pushed for a winner – however, they were caught out on the break, allowing Aggie Beever-Jones to give the Toffees the three points in added time.
Finally, the last game of the weekend saw Liverpool take on West Ham United in an uninspiring 0-0 draw. Neither team could break the other down effectively – they shared just a single shot on target between them.
