Arsenal midfielder Katie McCabe was recently in the headlines – she picked up plaudits after scoring a wonderful ‘Olympico’ goal direct from a corner for the Republic of Ireland against Canada in the group stage of the 2023 World Cup.
McCabe, who is known for scoring wonder goals, managed to catch the Canadian goalkeeper off her line – allowing the Irish superstar to lob the ball over her from the corner quadrant.
She is not the only Arsenal player to have scored a dramatic goal in the women’s world cup so far – earlier in the tournament, newly-signed Amanda Ilestedt nodded the ball into the back of the net for Sweden against South Africa in the last minute of the game.

congratulates a very nice championship goal, but this game GAME!! IT'S A TEAM, that's what everyone should do, it's not an effort by one and there they kill me with anger to see that they reached the goal and they didn't play as a team what despair gave me😭😡

How did the game between Ireland and Canada finish?
Sadly, after McCabe’s goal, things began to unravel for Ireland. Canada equalised on the stroke of half time after an own goal from Megan Connolly – this was followed up in the 53rd minute by a goal from Adriana Leon. Ireland put up an admirable effort, but they could not find a response and were knocked out of the tournament as a result.
Despite the crushing defeat for the Girls in Green, Arsenal fans nevertheless expressed their pride in McCabe’s performance – the goal she scored was merely the cherry on top of the cake.
