Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor has revealed that talks over extending his contract at the club have not gone smoothly.

The 50-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season and, while he is still hopeful that a resolution will be found, he admits things have taken longer than he would have liked:

“We’ve had discussions since last May. They have been dragging more than I’d like but it has to be right for the club and for me. I love working here. This club has played a big part in my development as a coach, and before that as a player. We are in a good place. I am excited about this group of players. Hopefully, I’ll have some positive news soon.”

Taylor has been in charge of City since 2020. During his time in the hot seat, he has won two domestic cups (the Women’s FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup in 2021), as well as finishing runners-up in the Women’s Super League twice.

However, City ended last season in third, nine points off champions Chelsea, and they had a disastrous start this campaign. They were knocked out by Real Madrid in the Champions League qualifiers, while they were beaten by Aston Villa and Chelsea in their first two WSL fixtures.

Since then, though, City have been unbeaten in the league and that may lead to Taylor getting the extension he wants.
