After the first legs of the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals, Arsenal trail Bayern Munich by a solitary goal, while Chelsea have a narrow lead over reigning champions Lyon. It was a mixed bag of results for the WSL representatives still in the competition, with the second legs of their ties looming.

Arsenal were defeated by Bayern Munich by a score of 1-0 – despite the North London club enjoying the lion’s share of the play. The Gunners put forth a commendable effort, but lacked the killer edge needed to make the breakthrough – they were desperately missing the likes of Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema.

Bayern’s goal was scored by Lea Schuller en route to their victory – she also helped to create the goal with a beautiful turn on the ball. Arsenal have it all to do in the second leg – however, they will have the home advantage.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were the happier of the two WSL sides, as they beat last year’s Champions League winners Lyon 1-0. The only goal of the game was scored by Guro Reiten, who curled a magnificent strike into the corner of Christiane Endler’s net.

The French giants began to turn the screw in the second half – nevertheless, Chelsea’s defence remained steadfast and prevented Lyon from netting an equaliser – in the second leg, it is advantage Blues.

Barcelona overcame Roma away from home by a score of 1-0 – the only goal of the game was scored by 19-year-old Salma Paralluelo. Roma grew into the game as it drew on, but it was too little, too late for the Italians.

In the final first-leg encounter of the round, PSG were felled by Wolfsburg by a score of 1-0. Elisa de Almeida gave away a penalty for handball and was also sent off for her troubles – Dominique Janssen tucked the spot kick away to give Die Wölfinnen the advantage heading into the second-leg.
