Two WSL teams are gearing up for a pair of massive Champions League clashes this week – Chelsea are set to take on Lyon, while Arsenal will play the indomitable Bayern Munich.
As we reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, just eight teams remain – Chelsea, Arsenal, Roma, Barcelona, Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich, Lyon and PSG.
Arsenal needed to get through Group D to get this far – they shared a group with Lyon, Juventus and Zurich. The Gunners were largely dominant in it, losing just a single game en route to topping the table.
Chelsea, meanwhile, won their group in an even more convincing fashion. They went unbeaten in the group stage, defeating each of their rivals in Group A – which included Real Madrid, PSG and KFF Vllaznia Shkodër.
Arsenal arguably have the tougher draw out of the two WSL teams still in the competition. Bayern Munich, alongside Barcelona, steamrolled their group – despite this, they are only in second place in the women’s Bundesliga.
Lyon have Wendie Renard within their ranks – arguably the greatest centre-back in the history of the women’s game. She is lethal from set pieces – the Blues will need to be alert to this danger she presents.
Outside of this threat, the Blues will enter their game against Lyon as the favourites. The French team are the reigning Champions League champions, but floundered somewhat in their group. They suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Arsenal and only finished over the team in 3rd (Juventus) by a two-point margin.
