WSL Midweek Roundup

In this week’s edition of WSL action, Manchester United picked up a vital win over title rivals Arsenal – meanwhile, relegation-threatened Brighton won a massive three points as they defeated Everton.

In the game between United and Arsenal, United drew first blood on the stroke of halftime, as Alessia Russo slotted the ball into the back of the net following a smart cutback from Nikita Parris.

Chances were few and far between throughout the game. After United took the lead, they were happy to sit back and defend – their plan worked, as the Gunners failed to break them down. The win gave United a massive boost in their title charge, while the Gunners now look to be out of the race.

This is not where the bad news ends for Arsenal. Not only were they beaten, they also lost Leah Williamson to injury in the first half – she could be out of action for the remainder of the WSL season and the 2023 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Brighton picked up a shock 3-2 over Everton in the other WSL game of the evening. They startled the Blues with a scintillating start to the game, scoring two goals in the first half thanks to Elisabeth Terland and Katie Robinson.

The Blues battled back in the second half, as Katja Snoeijs scored just after the hour mark, but Brighton then went 3-1 up as Terland scored again. A second goal from Snoeijs proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Brighton picked up a crucial win in their battle for WSL survival.
