WSL Weekend Roundup

Over the weekend, we saw a scintillating collection of matches in the WSL – including two feisty local derbies. But who came out on top?

The first game of the weekend saw bitter rivals Liverpool and Everton share the spoils after a 1-1 draw. While Everton dominated possession, the Reds managed to fire off more shots – after 90 minutes, a stalemate seemed like a fair result.

The other local derby of the weekend, contested between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, was nowhere near as closely contested. The Gunners were dominant throughout, winning by a score of 5-1, as Tottenham’s rotten run continues. Caitlin Foord scored a brace, as Stina Blackstenius, Kim Little and Frida Maanum also got in on the act – Spurs’ sole goal came through a Bethany England penalty.

Manchester City picked up a huge win in their pursuit of the WSL title as they defeated Chelsea by a score of 2-0. The win saw City leapfrog Chelsea in the table. The Blues may have a game in hand, but the Citizens are on a roll, having won all five of their last league games.

Manchester United were also victorious at the weekend, as they swept aside West Ham. United’s goals came by the way of Katie Zelem, Hayley Ladd and a brace from Lucia Garcia as the Red Devils smashed the Hammers by a score of 4-0.

Aston Villa thoroughly dominated a struggling Leicester City outfit – Kenza Dali opened the scoring, as Alisha Lehmann and Rachel Daly both netted a brace to give the Villans a convincing win.

Finally, we had a relegation battle on our hands as Brighton faced off against Reading. Braces from Reading’s Emma Harries and Brighton’s Veatriki Sarri meant the game ended 2-2 – the result puts the Royals four points clear of the relegation zone, while the Seagulls are just two points above it.
