Arsenal forward Beth Mead has not been named in England’s squad for the Women’s World Cup later this summer.
The 28-year-old has been in rehab after suffering an ACL injury in November but Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman has ultimately decided that she won’t be able to play in the tournament Down Under.
It is a major blow for England’s chances of winning the World Cup, with Mead having won the Golden Boot and the Player of the Tournament for her performances at the Euros last year.
In terms of who has been selected, Manchester City have the most players of any team (six), including Ellie Roebuck, Esme Morgan, Alex Greenwood, Laura Coombs, Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly.
Four players from WSL Champions Chelsea have been selected, including Millie Bright, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles and Lauren James. Wiegman also chose four Manchester United stars: Mary Earps, Ella Toone, Katie Zelem and Alessia Russo.
WSL Player of the Season, Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly was deservedly named in the final 23 as well.
