Liverpool midfielder Sofie Lundgaard will miss the rest of the campaign after picking up a knee injury.
The Danish youth international was substituted in the first half of the Reds’ 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday.
After further assessment, the full extent of the injury has now been confirmed, with Lundgaard having sustained medial ligament damage.
The 21-year-old will now undergo extensive rehabilitation before returning to Matt Beard’s first-team squad for pre-season.
What games will Lundgaard miss?
With the Reds no longer in the Women’s FA Cup, having lost to Leicester City in the quarter-final stage earlier this month, it means they only have six WSL fixtures remaining this campaign.
Lundgaard will be absent for the Merseyside derby against Everton this weekend, as well as the subsequent matches against title challengers Manchester City, Bristol City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Leicester.
It is a big setback for Liverpool
Lundgaard had not featured that regularly in the opening months of the season. After moving from Fortuna Hjorring in January last year, she had been deployed mostly as a substitute with the odd start here and there. However, the Dane has been getting more game time recently. She played the full 90 minutes against Aston Villa in the 4-1 win just a few weeks ago.
The midfielder completed another full match versus Leicester in the FA Cup before being struck down in the subsequent fixture against West Ham.
There are, of course, others in the squad who can cover for Lundgaard but the Reds’ ambitions of finishing 4th in the table ahead of Manchester United won’t be helped by her absence. Heading into the final six fixtures, Matt Beard’s side are only trailing the Red Devils on goal difference.
