Both WSL teams in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals, Chelsea and Arsenal, saw their campaigns come to an end over the last week.

Chelsea fell to defeat against Barcelona, while Arsenal were beaten by Wolfsburg, despite spirited performances by both English outfits – here’s how it happened.

The Blues entered the second leg of their Champions League game with Barcelona 1-0 down – matters were made worse when Caroline Graham Hansen scored to make it 2-0 on aggregate to the Catalonian giants.

A goal from Guro Reiten just four minutes later made it 1-1 on the day, but Chelsea’s defensive approach made it tough for them to commit players forward. They couldn’t find a second goal, meaning their search for European gold continues.

Arsenal were beaten by Wolfsburg in their semi-final tie. They went into the second leg with the scores level, meaning both teams had it all to play for. The Gunners scored first, with Stina Blackstenius finding the back of the net in the 11th minute – however, the Germans equalised before the break thanks to Jill Roord.

Wolfsburg then took the lead in the second half, only for Jen Beattie to score – the scores were level at 2-2 as the game progressed into extra time. In the dying embers of the game, with a penalty shootout looking imminent, Pauline Bremer scored the winner to send the North London outfit crashing out of the competition.
