WSL FA Cup Semi-Finals Preview

Manchester United are gearing up to take on Brighton and Chelsea are getting ready to face a dogged Aston Villa outfit in the semi-finals of the Women’s FA Cup at the weekend – let’s take a look to see how each team got this far.

In the last round of the tournament, Manchester United defeated Championship outfit Lewes to progress to the Semis. Despite being in the division below United, Lewes didn’t make it easy for the Red Devils – eventually, however, United won by a score of 3-1. On the day, United’s goal scorers were Alessia Russo, Vilde Bøe Risa and Nikita Parris.

Chelsea needed to beat relegation-threatened Reading to get to the semi-finals. It was a dominant display from Chelsea, who were rarely threatened by the Royals – they won by a score of 3-1, with Jess Carter, Maren Mjelde and Guro Reiten all getting their names on the scoresheet.

Brighton are perhaps the surprise package this season – they got past Birmingham City in the quarter-finals to reach this stage. They defeated the Blues by a score of 2-0, with their first goal being scored directly from a Poppy Pattison corner – they doubled their lead just four minutes later with a penalty from Danielle Carter.

Finally, Aston Villa shocked everyone when they defeated Manchester City in the FA Cup quarters. The game entered extra time, with the scores level at 1-1 – Rachel Daly scored the winning goal to send the Villans through.
