WSL Weekend Roundup: Chelsea Defeat Manchester United

This weekend saw a collection of high-octane matches in the WSL – including Manchester United vs Chelsea, Arsenal vs Reading and Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur.

In the marquee match of the weekend, between two teams in the title race, Chelsea defeated Manchester United by a score of 1-0. It was an incredibly tight game – at times, it resembled a chess match more than it did a game of football.

Chelsea’s Sam Kerr made the breakthrough in the first half – from then on in, the Blues were content to sit on their lead. United couldn’t break them down, as the game ended 1-0 – with this victory, Chelsea leapfrogged the Red Devils to reach the top of the WSL table.

Arsenal overcame Reading in a terrific display. The Royals could not even muster a shot on target, such was the extent of Arsenal’s dominance. the score ended 4-0, with Kim Little, Frida Maanum and Leah Williamson all getting in on the act.

Liverpool bolstered their survival chances as they came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur. Despite a strike in the 17th minute from Rosella Ayane, Liverpool fired back with a double salvo from Emma Koivisto and Missy Bo Kearns. The scores ended at 2-1, with Spurs being condemned to their ninth league defeat in a row.

Manchester City had to fight hard to gain all three points when they took on a brave Brighton outfit. The scores were level up until the 89th minute, when Khadija Shaw guided the ball home after a goalmouth scramble to break Brighton’s hearts.

Elsewhere in the WSL, Aston Villa defeated West Ham away from home by a score of 2-1 – additionally, relegation-threatened Leicester City played out a goalless draw with Everton.
